8 Night Gibb, Bungles & El Questro

Broome-Kununurra or reverse

Day 1: Broome, Boab Prison Tree, Gibb River Road, Bell Gorge
An early start this morning as your guide picks you up from your Broome accommodation to begin your adventure. First stop is the Boab Prison Tree, which was sadly once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they were walked to Derby. Today, the hollow tree is a registered Aboriginal site of great cultural significance. We continue on for lunch in a scenic spot before joining the Gibb River Road. This afternoon we discover the stunning Bell Gorge, where rugged cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Spot for birdlife and cool off in the swimming holes at the top of the falls. Time permitting, we will hike to the lower pool of the gorge for a swim.
Overnight: Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge or Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Lennard River lookout, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Fitzroy Crossing
This morning we turn off the Gibb and onto Leopold Downs Road, stopping enroute at the scenic look-out at Lennard River Gorge. At Windjana Gorge National Park we'll spot for freshwater crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River. Windjana Gorge is over three kilometres long with 300 metre-high walls which are part of an ancient Devonian reef system. Continue to Tunnel Creek and wade through the cool waters of the cave by torchlight. Tunnel Creek National Park was the famous hideout used late last century by the Aboriginal leader Jandamarra. This is a nice spot for lunch. This afternoon we'll head to Fitzroy Crossing, home to the mighty Fitzroy River. Still standing in the old town is the original causeway crossing, the former post office (now backpacker accommodation), the police station and a footbridge across the Brooking Creek linking the Inn and the original cemetery.
Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Geikie Gorge cruise, Ngumpan Cliffs, China Wall, Halls Creek
This morning we join a local Ranger on a fascinating guided cruise through Geikie Gorge, carved by the Fitzroy River through part of an ancient limestone barrier reef, which snakes across the west Kimberley. Encounter wildlife such as freshwater crocodiles, birds and fish. Back on the road we head for the scenic Ngumpan Cliffs and onto the the remarkable China Wall, a sub-vertical quartz vein protruding up to 6m from the earth's surface. Overnight accommodation is in the gold rush town of Halls Creek - a busy service town for surrounding pastoralists, Aboriginal communities and travellers, and also the gateway to the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park.
Overnight: Kimberley Hotel Halls Creek

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We will enjoy stunning walks among the Beehive Domes and gorges. At Cathedral Gorge, there's time to relax and test out the acoustics while enjoying lunch and a cool drink. This afternoon we travel to the northern end of the park to walk into the amazing Echidna Chasm. Here, hundreds of Livistonia Palms line the Chasm and cling to the sheer sides of the cliffs. This evening we will enjoy falling asleep under a blanket of a million stars in the permanent cabins at Bungle Bungles Bushcamp. Bring a jumper, it gets cold here at night!

We continue north to our next stop, Molly Springs (Wijilawarrim) a tranquil little spring fed pool and waterfall. This shady and peaceful spot is the perfect location for lunch. Next, we cross the Diversion Dam and arrive into Kununurra, enjoying an afternoon tour of the Ord Valley and sunset at a scenic spot in Kununurra.

We'll have worked up an appetite by now, so next up is El Questro's famous Steakhouse on the banks of the Pentecost River. We'll enjoy a hike into the picturesque amphitheatre waterfall of Emma Gorge (approx. 40 min-1 hour walk each way) for a swim and afternoon tea.
